Celsius Sues Tether for $2.4 Billion Over Bitcoin Collateral Dispute

Comments Off on Celsius Sues Tether for $2.4 Billion Over Bitcoin Collateral Dispute

Amidst a tense legal dispute, Celsius Network Limited has taken legal action against Tether Limited, aiming to claim $2.4 billion in compensation. At the heart of the dispute lies the claim that Tether has breached their agreement by allegedly misusing Bitcoin collateral to settle outstanding debts.

Background of the Dispute

The conflict can be traced back to a 2022 agreement between Celsius and Tether. In this agreement, Celsius borrowed USDT, Tether’s stablecoin, from Tether, using Bitcoin as collateral. With the decline in the price of Bitcoin, Celsius had to step up and provide more collateral to protect its BTC holdings from being liquidated. On the other hand, Celsius argues that Tether mishandled the Bitcoin collateral, resulting in substantial financial setbacks for Celsius.

Celsius’ Allegations

Celsius claims that Tether’s actions violated their agreement. They claim that Tether’s decision to liquidate the Bitcoin collateral was unwarranted and caused significant financial damage. Celsius is demanding the recovery of around $2.4 billion worth of Bitcoin, in addition to compensation for damages and legal expenses.

Tether’s Response

Tether vehemently refutes the allegations, dismissing the lawsuit as an extortion attempt and a groundless endeavor to recoup losses resulting from Celsius’ mishandling of finances. Tether argues that they acted in line with the agreement’s terms and accuses Celsius of failing to fulfill its obligations by not supplying the necessary collateral when requested.

Industry Reactions

The lawsuit has generated a considerable response among members of the crypto community. Kyle Chasse, a well-known figure in the cryptocurrency space, shared his thoughts on the situation in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter).

The official document images of the dispute written by Celsius were posted by him for context. According to the document, Celsius alleges that Tether misused Bitcoin collateral to settle debts, which breaches their agreement. Although Tether has not yet provided a response to the allegations, the company has stated that they will never allow themselves to be taken advantage of by dishonorable lawsuits that are intended to obtain financial gain. They further stated that they will actively defend themselves against the unfounded claims leveled against them and anticipate to win this lawsuit.
