Taiwan Blocks Coinbase And Kalshi Websites Over Election Betting Concerns

TL;DR: Taiwanese authorities have reportedly restricted access to Coinbase and Kalshi sites over concerns involving election betting. The measures arrive ahead of local elections and underscore differing national approaches to prediction markets.

Taiwan has become another flashpoint in the debate over cryptocurrency-linked prediction markets after authorities reportedly restricted access to Coinbase and Kalshi websites.

The move was reported in October ahead of local elections scheduled for November 28, with officials citing restrictions on betting linked to political outcomes.

Kalshi operates event-based contracts, while Coinbase offers a wider set of cryptocurrency services. The specific reach and technical mechanism of the reported restrictions should not be confused with a criminal conviction against either business.

Why Election Contracts Create Problems

Prediction markets allow traders to take positions tied to possible future events. Some supporters argue these contracts offer useful information about public expectations.

But not every jurisdiction regards election-linked contracts as ordinary financial products. Taiwan has strict rules concerning election gambling and previously restricted access to other prediction-market services.

Authorities are concerned that wagering on election outcomes may introduce incentives that conflict with local electoral rules.

An Increasingly Fragmented Market

The situation illustrates the difficulties faced by financial platforms operating across borders.

A product permitted or regulated in one country may be restricted in another, even when it is offered through the same website.

Coinbase said it was investigating reports of reduced website access, while Kalshi indicated Taiwan was not a permitted market for its services.

Neither response establishes wrongdoing. The broader issue is whether prediction contracts should be treated as financial derivatives, gambling or something requiring a separate regulatory framework.

As these markets grow, such disputes are likely to become more common.
