Animoca Announces ADGM Fund-Management Permission for Institutional Expansion

TL;DR

Animoca announced the ADGM permission on November 2.
The fund-management permission took effect on October 13 and excludes retail clients.
Individual fund terms and investment exposure remain separate questions.

Animoca Brands has added a fund-management authorization in Abu Dhabi to its institutional business. The company announced on November 2 that Animoca Asset Management (AD) Limited had received Financial Services Permission from ADGM’s Financial Services Regulatory Authority to manage collective investment funds in or from the financial centre.
The company announcement follows an earlier effective date: the ADGM register dates permission 250097 to October 13, 2026. It prohibits dealing with retail clients and holding or controlling client assets, defining a narrower scope than a general licence to provide every crypto service.
Fund management gives institutional investors a familiar route
A professionally managed fund can bring several decisions into one structure: the investment mandate, who has discretion over transactions, how assets are valued and what investors receive in return for contributing capital. That can make a digital-asset strategy easier to assess than a collection of direct token purchases.
It also creates a clearer place to ask difficult questions. An investor can examine the manager’s authority, the legal entity responsible for the assets and the process for calculating performance. Those questions remain important whether a portfolio holds tokens, equity in blockchain companies or another form of exposure.
For Animoca, the potential commercial advantage is being able to meet an allocator through a regulated investment-management structure. Permission does not itself supply investor demand, a track record for a new strategy or a pool of committed money.
Abu Dhabi and Dubai authorizations have different scopes
The group’s presence elsewhere in the UAE offers relevant context without changing the meaning of this approval. Dubai’s VARA public register separately lists Animoca Brands Middle East Advisory FZCO for broker-dealer and management and investment services, with institutional and qualified-investor conditions.
The entities and regulators should not be collapsed into a single blanket licence. A client dealing with an investment manager needs to know which company signs the agreement, what service it provides and which permissions apply to that relationship.
This becomes particularly relevant when a group operates across investments, advisory work, technology and token-related services. A recognizable brand can span several businesses whose responsibilities differ. Documentation needs to follow the actual service, rather than relying on the reputation of the parent.
The portfolio creates opportunities and questions
An investor with a wide network of technology businesses may have access to early projects, founders and commercial information that an outside allocator cannot easily obtain. That can be useful when evaluating young markets where conventional financial histories are limited.
The same proximity creates questions about potential conflicts. A fund might encounter opportunities involving companies in which a related business already has an interest. Investors would reasonably want to understand how such situations are identified, reviewed and disclosed, without assuming from the authorization alone that any particular transaction is planned.
Valuation is another practical issue. A liquid token, a venture investment and a contractual right to future revenue can behave very differently when markets weaken. Combining them in a strategy requires a coherent explanation of liquidity and how often investors can withdraw.
From permission to an investable product
The next meaningful disclosures would concern named funds, their objectives, eligible investors, custody arrangements, fees and redemption terms. Those details turn a broad institutional ambition into something a prospective allocator can compare with other options.
Capital raised is also different from assets already invested. A fund can secure commitments before deploying them, and a product can launch without immediately reaching material scale. Keeping those stages separate makes progress easier to measure.
For now, Animoca has reported an additional regulated capability in a market central to its regional expansion. The authorization strengthens the framework through which the group can pursue institutional business; the quality of the investment products built within that framework will determine the longer-term outcome.
